South Africa’s Western Cape province, including Cape Town, has experienced severe devastation and loss of life due to heavy rain and winds over the weekend. The death toll has climbed to 11, with authorities warning that it may rise as floodwaters recede. The destructive weather has caused widespread damage, including flooded homes, destroyed crops, damaged infrastructure, and impassable roads. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate and rescue individuals who may be trapped in partially submerged homes.
Tragically, eight of the fatalities occurred when an informal settlement was electrified due to the flooding, resulting in electrocutions from illegal power connections. Additionally, a group of 72 primary school students and 10 adults found themselves trapped in a resort in Oudtshoorn after a nearby river overflowed. Fortunately, they were rescued when the water subsided.
The impact of the floods is far-reaching, with over 80 roads closed and approximately 15,000 homes without electricity. The City of Cape Town has declared a major incident and seeks additional resources and relief measures to manage the aftermath of the rainfall. The popular Steenbras Nature Reserve and Gorge hiking route have been temporarily closed to assess the extent of the flood damage.
Provincial cabinet minister Anton Bredell has highlighted the urgent need for assistance, as helicopters are deployed to search for individuals in dire situations. Unfortunately, the situation is expected to be dire in some areas. It is worth noting that these destructive rains arrived just one week after the region experienced unusually high spring tides. Climate change has been attributed to several recent weather-related disasters in South Africa, further emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures.
