In a shocking display of religious violence, thousands of Muslims in Pakistan have set fire to churches and vandalised homes belonging to Christians following claims that two men had desecrated the Quran. The attacks, which took place in Jaranwala, have caused significant damage to several churches and have left the Christian community in fear and distress.
According to the police, at least four churches have been set on fire, while residents claim that up to a dozen buildings connected to churches have been damaged. Blasphemy, a crime punishable by death in Pakistan, has provoked numerous incidents of mob violence in the past. While no one has been executed for blasphemy, many individuals have lost their lives after being accused of this crime.
The police have presented their case against the two Christian men who stand accused of desecrating the Quran. They claim to have found pages of the holy book with derogatory remarks written in red. Yassir Bhatti, a 31-year-old Christian, had to flee his home to escape the violence. He recounted the horrific events, stating that the mob broke windows and doors, looted household items, and piled them up in front of the Church to be burnt. Bibles were also desecrated with no regard for Christian worship and beliefs.
Disturbing videos posted on social media platforms depict protesters demolishing Christian buildings while the police seem to be passively observing. Amir Mir, the information minister for Punjab province, has condemned the alleged blasphemy and announced that thousands of police officers have been deployed to the area. Dozens of people have already been detained. The mob was reportedly composed mostly of members from an Islamist political party called Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), although the party has denied any involvement.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar has called for swift action against those responsible for the violent attacks. Meanwhile, Pakistani bishop Azad Marshall, based in Lahore, expressed deep pain and distress on behalf of the Christian community. In a plea for justice and action, he called upon law enforcement and the judiciary to immediately intervene and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens in their homeland.
