The Shocking Impact of Racist Stabbings in Finland

The city of Oulu in northern Finland has been rattled by two disturbing incidents of stabbings that are suspected to be racially motivated. The first attack involved a 33-year-old man allegedly attacking a 12-year-old boy of foreign background, who is currently being treated for serious injuries in the hospital. The second attack, which occurred a week later, involved a 15-year-old allegedly stabbing a man with a foreign background. These incidents have left foreign-born citizens feeling unsafe and have prompted strong condemnation from Finnish politicians. President Alexander Stubb and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo have both spoken out against racism and violence, calling these attacks “disgusting” and emphasizing that there is no place for such behavior in Finland. The opposition Social Democrats have proposed urgent discussions in Parliament regarding far-right violence, with support from all parties except the far-right Finns Party. These incidents have not only shocked the residents of Oulu but have also raised concerns about the safety of foreign residents in the city. PhD student Samina Kazi-Prat from India, who moved to Oulu for its safety, now feels the need to be more cautious and vigilant, following these attacks. Another young woman from the Middle East, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her experience of facing racist comments on social media and expressed fear for her safety in Oulu. Mayor Ari Alatossava has assured that the city has increased police presence and support services for citizens with an immigrant background to address these concerns.
