Sixto Rodriguez, the musician and subject of the documentary Searching for Sugar Man, has sadly passed away at the age of 81. Born in Detroit, Rodriguez launched his career in 1967 but struggled to find success in the US. Despite this, his music gained a cult following overseas, particularly in South Africa where it became a symbol of youth protests against apartheid. However, Rodriguez was unaware of his international fame until his daughter discovered a website dedicated to him in 1997. This discovery led to Rodriguez embarking on a tour of South Africa and Australia in the late 1990s. The release of the Searching for Sugar Man documentary in 2012 propelled his career to new heights, leading to successful album sales and performances at major festivals. Rodriguez’s death is a great loss to the music industry, but his music will continue to resonate with fans around the world, ensuring that his legacy lives on. Rest in peace, Sixto Rodriguez.
