In a significant escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow has launched its biggest drone attack on Kyiv since its full-scale invasion began last year. The capital city of Ukraine was under siege as residents were abruptly awakened by explosions before dawn on Saturday. For more than six hours, the booms of Kyiv’s air defenses echoed through the city as wave after wave of attacks hit from the north and east.
According to officials, more than 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones were fired at the capital, with 74 of them successfully shot down. These drones, considered a cheaper alternative to ballistic missiles due to Russia’s dwindling missile stocks, have a distinctive wingspan and are slower in comparison. Despite the air defenses intercepting the majority of the drones, the falling debris still posed a lethal threat. Fortunately, only a few people were reported to be injured, and some buildings, including a kindergarten, suffered damage.
The attack came as a stark reminder that Moscow had stockpiled missiles during the quiet period preceding the assault. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks and vowed to work towards uniting the world in defense against Russian terror. However, the strategy of depriving Ukrainians of power and water that was employed in the past has ultimately failed, as authorities have efficiently repaired damaged infrastructure and improved their air defense capabilities.
