In a shocking turn of events in the village of Texcapilla, Mexican villagers took matters into their own hands when faced with constant threats and extortion from the notorious Familia Michoacana criminal gang. After the gang attempted to extort money from farmers, the villagers fought back, resulting in the death of ten gang members and four locals. The residents of Texcapilla had long been subjected to the gang’s control, with local business people being forced to pay “protection money” to the criminals. However, the gang recently expanded their extortion racket to include the farmers in the village. They demanded a fee for every square meter of land the farmers planted, creating a criminal ground rent system. In a meeting to negotiate a reduced fee, which proved fruitless, the gang ordered the farmers to gather at the football pitch for a showdown the following day. Faced with intimidation and threats, the farmers made a courageous decision to stand up to the gang and refuse to pay altogether.
On the day of the confrontation, gang members opened fire on the farmers, who defended themselves with the tools of their trade, such as sickles, machetes, and shotguns. The deadly fight resulted in the death of the gang leader, known as “El Payaso.” While the villagers achieved a victory on that day, they have since been living in fear of retaliation. Concerns have arisen about the fate of 14 villagers, including four children, who mysteriously disappeared after the confrontation. One villager was abducted from the hospital where he was being treated for injuries sustained during the fight.
To protect the villagers, the National Guard has deployed hundreds of members to the area, and the governor of Mexico state, Delfina Gómez, has assured residents that officials will not abandon them. The authorities aim to prevent the emergence of vigilante forces, which have arisen in other rural regions of Mexico in the past.
