Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has revealed on social media that she has separated from her long-time partner, Andrea Giambruno, after explicit comments made off-air by Giambruno on a TV show were broadcasted. The couple, who had been together for almost 10 years, decided to end their relationship due to their diverging paths. Ms. Meloni expressed gratitude towards Giambruno for their time together and for their daughter. She also addressed those who attempted to undermine her by targeting her family, stating that they should know that she remains resilient. Giambruno’s off-air comments, which included flirtatious remarks towards female colleagues and references to group sex, have caused controversy and speculation. This incident is not the first time he has been involved in a scandal, as he previously made controversial comments regarding a gang-rape case. Despite their ideological differences, Meloni defended him, stating that his words were misinterpreted and shouldn’t reflect on her personally. Meloni is known for her strong traditional Catholic family values and opposition to same-sex parenting. Her allies and political colleagues, including Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, publicly expressed their support and solidarity. The incident has also brought attention to Mediaset, the TV company Giambruno works for, which was previously owned by Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi was heavily criticized for contributing to a culture of sexism and machismo in Italian television. The separation announcement and its aftermath have sparked discussions about personal relationships in the public eye, the role of the media, and societal attitudes towards gender and sexuality in Italy.
