EU’s von der Leyen Seeks Second Term and Promises Climate Action and Defence Projects

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is vying for a second term, with a focus on defense, security, and climate policy. In her address to the European Parliament, she vowed to create a “European Democracy Shield” and emphasized the need for strength in decision-making. Von der Leyen highlighted her commitment to green policies, promising a 90% greenhouse gas emission reduction target for 2040. She also pledged to launch common defense projects, including a European air shield, and reinforced Europe’s borders by tripling the number of border guards. Additionally, she addressed social rights, affordable housing, and the situation in Gaza, appealing to various political groups within the Parliament. Notably, she criticized Hungary’s Viktor Orban for his recent trip to Moscow, describing it as an “appeasement mission.” The outcome of the vote, held in secret to allow MEPs to vote independently, will determine if von der Leyen secures another five years in office. If unsuccessful, European leaders will need to nominate a new candidate for approval by the Parliament. Despite efforts to secure support from various party groupings, uncertainties remain about the outcome of the vote, with some centrist and right-wing MEPs expressing reservations about backing von der Leyen’s nomination. The decision will have implications for the future direction of the EU and its leadership on climate issues and defense initiatives.
