His pregnant wife, dogs, and cockerels also resided in The Jungle with him. The operation resulted in the death of a police officer and left several inmates and security personnel wounded.
In an effort to weaken the Rotela Clan’s influence at Tacumbú prison, around 700 inmates, including Rotela himself, were transferred to other correctional facilities across the country. The authorities have not disclosed the new location of Rotela or the measures taken to ensure his confinement.
Armando Javier Rotela, known for his criminal activities over the past two decades, has been involved in cattle raiding, robbery, and drug trafficking. His control of the illegal drugs market earned him the moniker “crack czar” in Paraguay. Notably, he employed women and children to transport drugs due to their reduced likelihood of attracting police attention. In 2011, large sums of cash were discovered on his property, concealed in plastic bags submerged underwater. After briefly escaping from prison in 2012, Rotela remained at large until his re-arrest in 2016. Despite his incarceration, analysts believe Rotela continued to expand his drug trafficking enterprise.

The justice ministry plans to disperse the overcrowded Tacumbú penitentiary inmates to different prisons across the country, yet concerns persist about the potential for the Rotela Clan’s influence to spread, rather than diminish.
