The disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan has witnessed one of the deadliest incidents in its three-year-long history of clashes. More than 50 people, including United Nations peacekeepers, were killed in attacks by armed groups. The violence is believed to be linked to a land conflict between rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group. The joint administration of Abyei by both Sudan and South Sudan has remained unresolved since South Sudan’s independence in 2011. The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, urging leaders to use their influence to support peace.
