Airbnb recently announced that it is implementing a global ban on the use of surveillance cameras inside rental properties, effective at the end of next month. The update will impact a smaller subset of listings on the platform, as the majority of Airbnb properties do not currently have security cameras installed.
Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, stated that the changes were made in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts. The company will continue to gather feedback to ensure that the new policies align with the expectations of its global community. The current rules permit the use of security cameras in common areas like living rooms and hallways, as long as they are clearly disclosed in the property listing. However, the updated policy will prohibit outdoor cameras that have a view inside the property, as well as the placement of cameras in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms.
Despite the ban on indoor surveillance cameras, doorbell cameras and noise monitors in common areas will still be allowed, provided that they are disclosed in the property listing. Airbnb aims to strike a balance between hosts’ security concerns and guests’ privacy rights, recognizing the importance of monitoring unauthorized activities while respecting individuals’ right to privacy. The company’s decision to implement the ban follows a recent parody sketch on Saturday Night Live that poked fun at Airbnb’s privacy policies, garnering over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
