Europe’s farmers have taken to the streets in large numbers to express their grievances and frustrations. The protests are driven by a range of issues, including sustainability policies, the effects of the war in Ukraine, competition from imports, and the high cost of living. Farmers argue that these challenges threaten their survival and the viability of the agricultural sector. The protests have gained momentum across Europe, with demonstrations in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries. The farmers’ anger is directed not only at their national governments but also at the European Union (EU) and its agricultural policies. They believe that the EU’s measures to revamp the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) have made the sector less competitive and reduced their support. In addition, the influx of cheap agricultural products from Ukraine, following the lifting of trade restrictions, has further exacerbated the situation. Eastern European countries, particularly Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania, have been hit hard by the competition from Ukrainian imports. The protests have also been fueled by concerns about climate change, water restrictions, and the failure of regional governments to compensate farmers for losses caused by heatwaves and droughts. The demonstrations have gained political significance, with Eurosceptic parties aligning themselves with the farmers’ cause. However, the response from EU decision-makers has been vague and limited, leaving many farmers feeling forgotten and betrayed. The protests have highlighted the need for a reassessment of agricultural policies and trade regulations to ensure the viability of farming communities in Europe.
