Poland is on the brink of a pivotal election that could determine the fate of its democracy. The ruling right-wing Law and Justice party, or PiS, is seeking a third term in office, while opposition parties are rallying to protect the rights and freedoms won by the Solidarity movement three decades ago. The campaign has been bitter and divisive, with concerns over a shrinking independence of the courts, backsliding on women’s rights, media freedom, and strained relations with the European Union. The election is being hailed as the most important since 1989, and young voters are being urged to participate for the sake of Poland’s future.
