The co-founder of Google Deepmind, Demis Hassabis, has highlighted the need for responsible and cautious development of AI in contrast to the “move fast and break things” approach of traditional tech giants. In an interview with the BBC, he emphasized the importance of understanding and deploying AI systems in safe and responsible ways. Hassabis outlined three broad categories of threats posed by AI and stressed the need to start working on solutions for all of them. He also discussed DeepMind’s AI program, AlphaFold, which has the potential to revolutionize the discovery of new medicines. This comes ahead of the AI safety summit held in the UK, where world leaders, tech executives, and researchers will discuss maximizing the benefits of AI while minimizing risks, such as bio-terrorism and cyber attacks. The event’s guest list includes notable figures like US Vice President Kamala Harris, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and representatives from major tech companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Tesla. The summit aims to shape discussions and policies surrounding AI safety and regulation.
