Khaled’s journey as an author began with his debut novel, “The Guard of Deception,” which quickly garnered attention and established him as a rising star. He later ventured into television series writing, earning praise and acclaim for his work on the popular drama “A Portrait of the Jalali Family.” However, it was his third novel, “In Praise of Hatred,” that solidified his position as a literary powerhouse. The novel received the prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature in 2013 and was translated into six languages, further expanding his reach and influence.
In 2016, Khaled Khalifa’s novel “Death is Hard Work” was nominated for the National Book Awards in the United States, showcasing the universal appeal of his storytelling and shedding light on the Syrian war through the lens of a father’s arduous journey to bury his deceased father. In 2014, he was offered an opportunity to participate in a prestigious writers’ program at Harvard University, an honor that many would have eagerly accepted. However, Khaled’s longing for his hometown and his deep connection to his country prevented him from embarking on a new chapter elsewhere. His attachment to his home and the memories it held outweighed any desire for a fresh start.
In a poignant interview for a short film in 2019, Khaled Khalifa shared his sentiments of feeling like an exile in his own country and expressed his aversion to creating new memories elsewhere.
