The ongoing protests by Indian farmers demanding minimum crop prices and government support have intensified as they resume their march towards Delhi, despite heavy barricades and police resistance. The protesters, primarily from Punjab state, have faced tear gas, barricades, and clashes with security forces as they continue their journey towards the capital. With more than 200 unions joining the protest, the farmers are demanding guaranteed floor prices for their crops, also known as minimum support price (MSP), as well as the fulfillment of the government’s promise to double farmers’ income. Furthermore, they seek to sell their produce in government-controlled wholesale markets or mandis. The farmers’ march poses a significant challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, as farmers constitute a powerful voting bloc in India. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will need to carefully address their concerns and demands to avoid alienating this influential group ahead of the upcoming general elections. Previous protests in 2020 resulted in the government rolling back controversial agriculture reforms, highlighting the potential impact of sustained farmer activism. The farmers have also received support from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which has affirmed their right to freedom of movement. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress party, have expressed solidarity with the protesters and pledged to enact laws guaranteeing minimum prices for farmers if voted into power in the upcoming elections. The outcome of these protests will likely have far-reaching implications for India’s agricultural sector and the government’s relationship with the farming community.
