In a nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to reinforce defensive structures across the front line, following his meetings with commanders in the south and east regions. He highlighted the encirclement attempts by Russian forces in Avdiivka and the targeting of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in the south. As the temperatures drop below freezing and Ukraine is covered in snow, President Zelensky referred to the winter season as a new phase of the war. The focus of fortification efforts includes eastern towns in the Donetsk region, a defensive line between Kupyansk and Lyman in the north-east, and the region around the capital Kyiv. However, concerns arise about the potential for a “frozen” conflict despite ongoing clashes, as Ukraine’s offensive operations since the summer failed to yield significant gains. The morale of frontline soldiers on both sides will undoubtedly depend on their preparedness for the harsh winter conditions.
