China’s gloomy economy has not dampened its people’s wanderlust. It is seeing record travel for the annual “Golden Week” holiday despite slow growth, high youth unemployment and a property market in crisis. This year’s Golden Week has turned into the year’s longest break, with young Chinese on a shoestring budget looking to explore closer to home. Although China’s economy has shown no major signs of recovery, businesses are hopeful but wary. Travelers are tightening their purse strings but are eager to embark on “revenge travel” after prolonged Covid-19 lockdowns. They are seeking advice on social media on how to make the most of their holiday, exchanging itineraries, budget breakdowns, and recommendations for affordable places to eat. Golden Week has resulted in a surge in domestic travel bookings, with a significant increase compared to the same period last year. However, the average spend per traveler may not stack up against the increased traffic. Local businesses are aware of shrunken budgets and are offering deals to attract tourists. Although some travelers are choosing to stay within China and explore local destinations, many otherwise cautious consumers are willing to splurge on one-time expenses like travel. This surge in domestic travel is undoubtedly a boost for the sluggish economy, but it remains to be seen whether this is pent-up demand or if the demand will be long-lasting. The lifting of restrictions on international travel has also contributed to the increase in travel activities, although outbound travel is still down compared to 2019. However, momentum seems to be picking up, with certain countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and South Korea expecting a larger number of Chinese tourists this week compared to Golden Week in 2019. Travelers have different motivations, with some seeking adventure abroad and others choosing destinations closer to home. Overall, Chinese travelers are eager to explore despite the economic challenges, proving that wanderlust prevails even in uncertain times.
