The recently shared video on social media, analyzed by BBC Verify, indicates a severely damaged British-made Challenger 2 tank. A reliable western defense source confirmed that the tank shown in the footage is indeed a Challenger 2, and fortunately, all crew members survived the incident. This marks the first confirmed sighting of a Challenger 2 tank on the frontline since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Moreover, it is also the first time this tank has been targeted by enemy fire, as stated by Hamish de Bretton Gordon, a former British tank commander. The video exposes smoke billowing from the damaged vehicle and aligns with reports from Ukrainian authorities, claiming their forces have successfully breached the initial Russian defensive lines in southern Ukraine. Nonetheless, BBC Verify has yet to verify the precise location and time of the incident. Nevertheless, the video footage’s surroundings match other recordings depicting Ukrainian forces in the vicinity of the recently recaptured village of Robotyne in the southeastern region of the country. Earlier this year, Britain announced its decision to dispatch 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine after providing training for Ukrainian tank crews back in March.
