A Chinese rights activist, believed to be Kwon Pyong, has been arrested in South Korea after a daring attempt to flee on a jet ski. The activist, known for his criticism of President Xi Jinping, reportedly traveled approximately 300km across the Yellow Sea before encountering difficulties near Incheon. The Chinese embassy in Seoul has declined to comment on the incident. This event highlights the increasing use of exit bans by Beijing to prevent activists from leaving China and sheds light on the extreme measures dissidents are willing to take to seek asylum. While Mr. Kwon’s entry into South Korea was illegal, it was driven by the constant surveillance and political persecution he faced in his home country. This incident raises questions about the challenges faced by activists and the limited options available for seeking refuge.
