Bangladeshi students have defied a ban on public rallies to continue their protests demanding the government eliminate a job quota for the families of veterans from the country’s independence war. The protests, which have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, have led to clashes with security forces across various districts of Bangladesh. Despite a complete shutdown of mobile internet and telephone lines, protesters have remained steadfast in their demands, blockading roads, and organizing symbolic funeral processions to honor those who have lost their lives. The situation has escalated to the extent that even schools and universities have closed, with authorities resorting to force to disperse the crowds. Parents, students, and opposition parties have all joined in the demonstrations, with chants for merit-based recruitment and denouncement of discriminatory practices. The ban on rallies, imposed to protect lives and property after the violence on Thursday, has not deterred the protesters, who have vowed to continue until their demands are met. The widespread unrest in Bangladesh, including the occupation and vandalism of the state broadcaster, BTV, highlights the urgency of addressing the grievances of the students and preventing further escalation of violence.
