US officials have identified and taken action against an alleged AI-powered information operation run from Russia, involving nearly 1,000 accounts that impersonated Americans. The accounts, which were operated by bots and not real people, were designed to promote pro-Russian narratives, particularly about the conflict in Ukraine. FBI Director Christopher Wray described this as the first disruption of a Russian-sponsored generative AI-enhanced social media bot farm. The bot farm was reportedly orchestrated by a deputy editor at Kremlin-owned RT, with the goal of spreading AI-generated disinformation to influence geopolitical narratives and undermine US allies. The operation involved the creation of fake accounts using artificial intelligence technology to automate the spread of propaganda on social media platforms. While the accounts have been deleted, the investigation is ongoing, and no criminal charges have been publicly announced. This incident highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in disinformation campaigns and the need for increased vigilance in identifying and countering such threats.
