At least 11 people have lost their lives and over 60 individuals are missing due to two devastating shipwrecks along the southern Italian coast. The German charity RESQSHIP was able to rescue and save 51 individuals from a sinking wooden boat, while discovering 10 bodies on the lower deck near the island of Lampedusa. Another tragic incident on the same day involved over 60 missing individuals, with 26 of them potentially being children, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The boats were transporting migrants who had started their journey from Libya and Turkey, as reported by UN agencies. Survivors from the shipwreck near Lampedusa were safely transferred to the Italian coastguard, while the deceased victims were being taken to the island. The migrants were from various countries including Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Unfortunately, these tragedies occurred on the deadliest migration route in the world, the Mediterranean, where over 23,500 individuals have lost their lives or gone missing since 2014, based on UN statistics. It’s crucial for authorities and organizations to enhance maritime safety measures and swift rescue operations to prevent such devastating incidents from reoccurring in the future.
