New Report Raises Doubts About Alec Baldwin’s Account of Rust Shooting

A new report into the fatal shooting on the set of the movie Rust has cast doubt over Alec Baldwin’s accounts of the events, raising questions about his involvement and potential criminal culpability. The report suggests that the trigger of the prop gun used in the shooting would have had to be pulled, contradicting Baldwin’s denial. This latest development has the potential to impact the ongoing case and could lead to charges being refiled against the actor.

The shooting incident occurred in October 2021, resulting in the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, who was both the star and producer of the movie, was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter but had the charges dropped in April. However, prosecutors emphasized that this dismissal did not absolve Baldwin of criminal culpability, leaving open the possibility of charges being refiled in light of new evidence.

The new report, written by weapons experts Lucien Haag and Mike Haag, was submitted to prosecutors in New Mexico. It addresses previous allegations of a possible modification to the gun used by Baldwin on the Rust set, stating that the report does not indicate any modification and highlights the necessity of pulling the trigger for the gun to discharge. The report suggests that if the gun’s hammer had not been fully retracted or if there were any bypassing of safety mechanisms, it would result in clear evidence of misuse.

This report poses significant implications for both Baldwin and Rust armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who is also charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering. Gutierrez Reed’s lawyers have argued that the new report supports their claim that no modifications were made to the gun and reinforces the contention that the trigger had to be pulled for the shooting to occur.

The timing of this report is noteworthy, as Gutierrez Reed recently pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. A jury trial is scheduled for December 6th to further investigate the death of Halyna Hutchins. The findings of the new report may potentially influence the proceedings and impact the outcome of the trial. Depending on the interpretation of the report’s findings, it is uncertain whether charges against Baldwin will be refiled.

The implications of this report extend beyond the legal sphere. The Rust shooting sparked conversations about on-set safety protocols, the handling of firearms, and the responsibility of actors and producers. This incident highlighted the potential dangers involved in using prop guns, shedding light on the need for stricter regulations and best practices in the film industry.

While the report raises doubts about Alec Baldwin’s account of the Rust shooting, it is important to remember that the legal proceedings are still ongoing, and all parties should be afforded the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The impact of this report remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly introduced new complexities to this high-profile case.
