The US military has embarked on a mission to help increase humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza by constructing a floating pier in the Mediterranean Sea. As images have surfaced, showing logistics vessels and personnel assembling the pier from steel segments next to a US Navy ship, it is clear that the US is taking significant steps to address the catastrophic hunger crisis facing Gaza. The goal is to have the pier and a causeway attached to the shore operational in a week, with the aim of delivering aid equivalent to as many as two million meals a day. A recent UN-backed assessment highlighted that 1.1 million people in Gaza were facing catastrophic hunger, with famine looming in northern Gaza by May. With the construction of the floating pier and the causeway underway, the US defense department is working on securing the implementation of the plan to deliver essential supplies to those in need. It is noteworthy that a maritime corridor cannot fully replace land delivery routes, which are essential for transporting the bulk of supplies. While the project involves close coordination with the Israel Defense Forces to secure the causeway, the US military has confirmed that there will not be any US troops on the ground during the construction and operation of the Floating Temporary Pier. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has assured that the pier will be ready in a week. Satellite images have shown the construction site near the USNS Benavidez, alongside a Military Sealift Command ship, indicating the progress made in the mission. Another aspect of the operation involves aid lorries driving down the causeway, which will be managed by a third party as part of the logistics plan. To support the operation, hundreds of sailors and soldiers will be stationed aboard the British Navy logistical support ship, RFA Cardigan Bay. The IDF has affirmed its commitment to increasing humanitarian aid daily into Gaza by securing the forces working on the pier. However, a Hamas official has expressed concerns regarding any non-Palestinian presence in Gaza, emphasizing their rejection of foreign military forces on Palestinian territory. Despite challenges and potential security risks, the extensive preparations made by the Israeli military demonstrate the commitment to ensuring the safe transfer of aid from the floating pier into Gaza. With the floating pier expected to handle a substantial amount of aid deliveries daily, there is hope for alleviating the severe food shortage in Gaza, attributed to Israeli restrictions, ongoing hostilities, and logistical challenges. While the UN reports on the number of aid lorries entering Gaza via different crossings, the focus remains on addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of the population in Gaza. As efforts are being intensified to provide aid and essential supplies, it is crucial to navigate the complexities involved in the operation and establish effective coordination among the stakeholders involved in the mission to avert a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
